Top 10 DIY Terrarium tips

by GIRIDHAR PARTHASARATHI 01 Jul 2024

Gardens under glass, or DIY terrarium, are glass enclosures in which you may design and construct miniature ecosystems with small plants and other ornamental components. With the right maintenance, terrariums can add confined, natural aspects to your house or place of business and last for many years. Compared to most other home plants or outdoor plants, terrariums usually require less care and attention. They do, however, occasionally need upkeep.

With terrariums, you can cultivate plants in unsuitable environments, such as your dry, dimly lit workspace or similarly dry homeroom. A closed terrarium can be transformed into a biosphere with controlled humidity, self-watering plants, and a smooth ecosystem with little to no human input.

You can relax knowing that modern terrariums are less about packing distant fishbowls and more about bringing nature indoors if memories of previous terrarium fads are starting to rush back. And, even in a much smaller environment, garden design is undoubtedly relevant.

These pointers should help you get going:

Top 10 DIY terrarium plant

1.Select a container that works well:

Take out that random vase, apothecary jar, canning jar, candy dish, cookie jar, or anything else you have lying about – practically anything will work. It will be simpler if you can get your hands inside the mouth of whatever you intend to utilise. With a lid, the environment requires less upkeep. If the container is empty, you can always cover it with a glass plate or leave it uncovered and check for moisture more frequently.

2.Choose suitable plants:

Plants for closed-top terrariums should be small, tolerant of low light levels, and tolerant of humidity. Ferns and mosses are good options, as are orchids, bromeliads, and a variety of other readily available houseplants. Plants that thrive in strong light and low humidity should be avoided, such as succulents, cacti, and most herbs (though mint is fine). These kinds of plants are ideal for an open-top terrarium.

3.Make use of the appropriate equipment:

The right-sized tools, like those in this terrarium tool kit, come in handy when working in a small area with restricted access.

4.Lay the base:

For the foundation layer, add tiny pebbles to promote drainage. Add a thin coating of charcoal on top to absorb surplus moisture and minimise bacteria and smells.

5. Fill in the planting soil:

Choose a mild humus-soil potting mix for your planting medium. Soil should be added to cover plant roots.

6.Set up your vegetation:

Just like in a garden bed, firmly plant your plants, and then give your terrarium a very light watering after planting. Shut it shut and observe the ecosystem come alive.

7.Locate the proper place:

Give your terrarium some diffused light. Sulphurous light can burn the contents.

8. Maintain cleanliness:

To maintain the health of your ecosystem, remove any dead or withered leaves right away.

9. Take a breath of fresh air:

Give the terrarium a little fresh air every ten days or so. After leaving the lid open for six hours, shut it back up. Add a tiny bit of water if there isn’t any condensation after shutting.

It’s easy, enjoyable, imaginative, and has the power to transform your life.

Mistakes to avoid whilst a DIY terrarium plant

1.Too much light:

The majority of outdoor plants that are good for terrariums don’t need very bright light. Terrarium glass can function as a magnifier and burn the plants if it is put in direct sunlight or an exceptionally intense light source.

The terrarium’s temperature can rise swiftly, and before you know it, it might be as steamy as a sauna. It’s advisable to keep terrariums out of the direct sun because most garden plants cannot withstand this heat.

2.Insufficient Light

Even though too much light might be harmful, most plant types require some light to survive. Use grow lights or fluorescent lights to add extra light to your terrarium if it isn’t getting enough indirect light, or move the terrarium near to a window that lets in plenty of indirect light.

3.Oversized flora

Keep your terrarium plants from growing lanky and overgrown; you want to be able to view the other ornamental components inside the terrarium as well as individual plants. When your terrarium plant types get too big and crowded, prune them to maintain the space looking nice and orderly. To maintain their tiny size, you can also trim their roots.

4.Ignorance of Dying Plants

Remove a terrarium plant right once if it appears to be sick, dead, or not prospering because its issues can spread to other plants. To remove the plant, use a long spoon, chopsticks, terrarium tool, or small spade, being cautious not to damage the roots of nearby plants. Swap out the plant for one that has comparable needs for hydration, light, and size. Make sure there are no air spaces in the soil surrounding the roots.

5.Using too much water

Using a spray bottle in place of a watering can is one method to avoid overwatering. Use a paper towel to absorb any excess water if you do overwater. Your terrarium garden plants should remain open until it has dried out. If you plan to use mosses in your terrarium, you may want to consider a closed terrarium system because these plants prefer dampness and do best in confined environments resembling rainforests.

Terrariums are a great alternative to make your dim-lit spaces into a Pinterest haven. Unleash your green thumb and try your hand at gardening with these DIY terrarium plants. These potting plants make for great indoor house plants and will improve the overall vibe of the place.

Happy Terrarium planting!
